The Biggest Skiing in AmericaTM
BIG SKY, MONTANA
Traveling with little gear other than a camera
and a fly rod, my friend and I recently embarked
beneath the blue skies of Southwestern
Montana only to rediscover what Lewis & Clark
discovered years ago. For the better part of 15
years, we have been traveling these parts of
Montana to see the refuge of the clean air and
the wide open spaces, always watching for the
right opportunity to explore a new river plateau
or mountain trail.
It is easy to understand how Lewis and Clark felt when they first entered the Gallatin Valley and
the area now known as Bozeman, Montana. The lofty mountains, verdant valleys and brilliant
blue skies touch the soul as few places can. It inspires all of your senses. That intriguing smell
is clean air.
The area is alive with history. The Sioux, Shoshone, Flathead, Nez Pearce and Blackfeet
tribes all lived and hunted game here. European trappers and mountain men thrived here.
Farmers found fertile fields and sold goods to miners caught up in the gold rush of the 1860’s.
Part of the Louisiana Purchase, the Montana Territory was established by President Abraham
Lincoln in 1864. Montana became a state in 1889.
Gallatin Valley has it all. Art, culture, music, theatre, shopping, dining, a major university, lodging
and an incredible array of outdoor activities. If you hunt, fish, ski, snow-mobile, hike, mountain
bike, camp, ride horses, play golf or pump
adrenaline on white water, you won’t find
a better place to pursue your pleasures.
Rivers run through it, towering mountains
surround it and eagles glide on refreshing
breezes above it. And Yellowstone National
Park is only 18 miles from Big Sky.
It’s easy to get there. United, Delta Air Lines,
Northwest, Frontier Airlines and Horizon
Air all slip into the convenient Gallatin Field
Airport from dozens of cities across America. Bozeman airport is served by nonstop flights
from 11 cities in 10 states making Big Sky easy to reach from anywhere in the country.
This place has Altitude without an Attitude. What we discovered in the Big Sky area was not
only lofty mountains, verdant valleys and brilliant skies, we found its greatest asset just may
be its people. There is a spirit here among its citizens that we haven’t found anywhere. A
spirit of caring, a willingness to welcome new
faces and create new friendships. Big Sky has
history, abundant wildlife, incredible scenery,
but above it all, it has wonderful people.
And did I mention the biggest ski mountain in
America? That’s right, 5500 skiable acres with
226 ski runs. If that is not enough, add to it
the second biggest vertical drop too. Big Sky
is also famous for 400” of snow annually and
always ranked as one of the least crowded
hills in the country.
Does fishing interest you? You won’t find a better area with the Yellowstone, Madison and the
Gallatin Rivers at “your doorstep.” Believe it or not, fish are pulled from Montana’s stream at
all times of the year. Wild Rainbow Trout, Brown Trout, Whitefish, and Arctic Grayling are just
a few of the species anglers land in Big Sky’s nearby streams.
We have searched the world over looking
for inspiration and we found it in Big Sky,
Montana. A four-season resort primed to
become the premier year-round mountain
resort in the country. Big Sky offers pristine
views, access to thousands of acres of
protected wilderness, only 18 miles to the
entrance to Yellowstone National Park,
and the largest ski mountain in America.
